Rambo is a 22-month-old German Sheppard imported from the Netherlands. Rambo was born on January 1, 2005. Before being selected as a Police K-9, each K-9 is thoroughly tested to determine its natural prey drive, play desire, courage, and socialization. Besides basic obedience, canines are trained in tracking, building and outdoor searches and narcotics detection and handler protection. Most of the commands to the canines are in German and the K-9s train around other canines, humans, traffic, and any other conditions they may face in real situations. Rambo is used primarily for Narcotic Detection, which means he is trained to locate marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin.
The K-9 Unit is assigned to the Patrol Division and is just that, a support service of Patrol. Dogs and Handlers are trained extensively so that they can be of service to their department or other agencies when the dogs’ special abilities are needed. Regardless of assigned hours, the service is available twenty-four hours a day on a call-out basis.
The police dog of today is like its human counterpart, professional and highly trained. Rambo is kenneled at the handler’s home. Handlers literally spend more time with their partners than any member of their family |
